In samenspraak met China op de Kaap organiseert TENT & CBK Rotterdam de tentoonstelling Far From Fong welke plaatsvindt van 9 juni t/m 27 augustus 2011 in Het Gemaal op Zuid.
Far From Fong laat actueel werk zien van de Chinees-Nederlandse kunstenaars Fenmei Hu, Khitan, Erwin Kho, Kwannie Tang, Zhen Tian, Dada Wang en Fong-Leng. Hoe gaan deze modeontwerpers, illustratoren, kunstenaars en designers om met hun culturele achtergrond?
Bijna zeventig jaar geleden werd de legendarische Chinees-Nederlandse modeontwerpster Fong-Leng geboren op ‘de Kaap’ (Katendrecht, Rotterdam). Ze werd wereldberoemd met spectaculaire kledingontwerpen waarin Oosterse technieken en motieven gecombineerd werden tot een volstrekt hippe look voor de Nederlandse beau monde van toen. Nu, veertig jaar later, timmert een nieuwe generatie kunstenaars aan de weg die in de geest van Fong-Leng, haar culturele roots inzet om een eigentijds beeld van onze samenleving te schetsen.
